In January of this year, Bert started with his new series of oil paintings.
The work is inspired by a poem 'The Waste Land' by T.S Eliot.
The flowers have vanished, what remains is the brackish land
The work will be shown from the 18th of April untill the 27th of September on appointment in Atelier van Santen, Zuiddijk 209, Zaandam.
Due to the coronavirus we will receive a maximum of 2 people at the same time and will not provide consumptions. Since the our atelier is spacious, it is easily possible to keep 1,5 meter distance form eachother.

Recent paintings and a sculpture from the artist Jan de Beus from Muiderberg(1958). His work has been displayed in and outside of the netherlands and is part of many public and private collections. The recent paintings are inspired by Richard Wangers Opera Tannhäuser. In the Chabot Museum in Rotterdam his work is also displayed.

Zaterdag 5 oktober, 15-17 uur, zal het nieuwe boek van Bert van Santen, Flowers, worden gepresenteerd in zijn atelier in Zaandam, Zuiddijk 209, met live muziek, drankjes en een passende expositie.
Bij deze nodigen wij u graag hiervoor uit! Op deze dag kunt u het boek, op verzoek gesigneerd aanschaffen tegen een introductieprijs van € 30.

Pieter Schmits schildert organische vormen. De basis is dunne verf of vernis die over een
horizontaal liggend doek loopt, met stugge partijen botst, gedeeltelijk oplost. Er vormen zich lagen die afwisselend dekkend en transparant zijn.
Organische vormen ontstaan, veranderen en gaan weer op in het geheel. De kwantumleer beschouwt zelfs alle werkelijkheid als organisch geheel, waarvan de delen onderling verbonden zijn en elkaar beïnvloeden. Van zichzelf hebben zij geen precieze locatie; deze krijgen ze wanneer ze worden bekeken. Wij maken ze tot een vast object.
De precieze vorm wordt dan bepaald door hoe je kijkt. Bijvoorbeeld, van heel dichtbij gezien verdwijnt de context en wordt het beeld vreemd. Een verwarde situatie, zoals een onverwachte confrontatie, laat geen tijd om te denken. Wel vormt zich dan in een flits een globale indruk, een kaal beeld, een oerervaring: iets of iemand is direct aanwezig.
Schoonheid zit hem in het zuivere maar ook in scheppende chaos en onregelmatigheid. Deze worden hier en daar ‘gevierd’ door ze te markeren met brons, analoog aan het boeddhistische principe van kintsugi.

“Barbares d’ Esprit” in Santorini
Santorini Tomato Industrial Museum “D.Nomikos”, in collaboration with Restart Contemporary Art Platform, proudly present the artists group “Barbares d’ Esprit”.
International audience visiting Santorini Island, will have the chance to see the exhibition “Barbares d’ Esprit 2019” and be introduced to the artwork of the post- contemporary group.
From June to September, new etchings and drawings will be presented to the spacious gallery of Tomato Industrial Museum.
Furthermore, according to the “Artists in Residence” program of the Museum, the members of the group will be hosted on Santorini from the 9th to the 23rd of September. During this period, “Barbares d’ Esprit” will be creating new artwork, inspired by the volcanic character of the island.
The group’s art sessions will take place at the Museums workshop. Cultural side events will be open for visitors.
Originated in Holland in 2016, Barbares d’ Esprit is a contemporary artistic movement based on visual arts. Ad Arma and Bert Van Santen, established Dutch artists, are the founders of the movement with an international character. They invite other artists to work with them in the group.
Mohammed Quraiseh, well known Iraqi artist living in Toronto Canada, joined the group early.
Kelly, a Greek sculptor is a member since January 2019.
“Barbares d‘ Esprit” works as one artist-one creator, that means two or more members work together on one art piece. The line of work of “Barbares d’Esprit” relies on the inspirational force of all participating artists. Each artwork is created in a synthetic way from sequential gestures of the group members. Everyone is free to act or react on his expressive means. The group focuses on the outcome as a multifaced artwork with one distinctive character that gives existence to a new identity.
The group’s Manifest is:
“We are artists of this time. Our work is innovatory. Our work is multidisciplinary. We work at the boundaries of what is possible. We do look back but our work is always directed forwards. We try to expand the possibilities of diverse techniques. We have rough and but also traditional ways of working. We are not limited. We embrace challenges by overcoming them by means of creativity. Our way of working connects us. Different nationalities do not devide us. Other cultural influences are welcome to us but still we are strongly connected to our own cultural background. We are curious and like to experiment. Our work reflects on the past, today and our personal vision of tomorrow, we are thinkers. We are all travellers in our own way. Our art is autonomous.”
The collaboration among Restart and Tomato Industrial Museum “D.Nomikos”, is on the base of reinforcing Cultural Tourism by presenting innovating contemporary art shows.

Fleurs d’espoir / Flowers of hope
The Flower Art Museum presents with 'Fleurs d'espoirs - Flowers of hope' the work of the versatile dutch artist Bert van Santen. An exhibition about hope and the search for an artistic answer to the social problems of our time.
Bert van Santen (1958, Leerdam) studied cultural anthropology. However, he identified himself more as an artist than a scientist. He has walked many roads, eventually leading him to the flower. The poems of Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867) inspired him to create several 'Fleurs du Mal': oil paintings, in which he breaks through the ominous surfaces accompanied by flowers coming to life on the canvas.
Van Santen also creates sculptures and remarkable artists' books - intensive research projects with various materials that led him to new views. His work is a reflection on society, not in the political sense, but as a personal and individual reaction: perceiving evil and wanting to fight back with beauty. The flower is in this sense a symbol of hope. The arrangement of the exhibition came to life thanks to Frank van der Linden, Lijn 66, Eindhoven.

Sunday the 6th of January 2019 from 15:00 till 19:00 the exposition'Barbares d'Esprit'(Thinking Barbarians)will open in Atelier van Santen at Zuiddijk 209 in Zaandam.
Bert van Santen and Ad Arma, whom both have been active artists for more than 30 years, are the founders of artistgroup 'Barbares d'Esprit'. They collaborate - with the two of them, and sometimes with other artists as well - on paintings and etchings.
In 2018, the work of 'Barbares d'Esprit' was showcased at the Kunst Rai in Amsterdam, where they had a solo stand.
During the opening both artists will be present.

'Barbares d’Esprit' ('Thinking Barbarians')
is the name of the new artist group that gallery 9 contemporary art presents at the KunstRAI | Art Amsterdam 2018.
The result of the collaboration between Ad Arma, Bert van Santen, Quraiseh and Mark Verdoes, is showcased at the KunstRAI. Abstract paintings, expressive and humble at the same time, the best of each artist melted together in one work of art.
The results of the second work session will be showcased At stand 18 at the KunstRAI in February 2018. The artworks consist of paintings on canvas (1 x 1 meters) and paintings on panels (1,5 x 1,5 meters).
Music plays an important role during the creative process. It directs and provokes, and is at the route cause of emotional connection during the process of creating pieces of art.
On the 4th of April, the evening of the opening of the KunstRAI, Tijs Klaassen accompanied the presentation of the 'Barbares d'Esprit's' artworks with a free improvisation on double bass.

The recent work of Bert van Santen "Fleurs du Mal", inspired by the poems of Charles Baudelaire has found it's origin in the reflection on modern problems in society.
The matter paintings that van Santen paints using oil paint showcase what he is all about as a colorist. The flowers and branches are almost reliefs. The flowers are attached to barren branches. This way, van Santen disconnects the flower from its romantic stereotype in his work.
By painting in a style that is rough and prickly van Santen's paintings get a dark accent, which causes them the be curious, mysterious and dark-romantic.
The exhibitions title 'I let all flowers bloom', refers to the book the Bert van Santen made between 2000 and 2002, which is showcased in its entirety using a video installation. Both the installiation and the exhibition as a whole artistically bridge the period between 2002 and the present.
For the exhibition a special edition (uv-inktjet-print, 48 x 59 cm) has been pressed in limited quantity. The picture for this special edition and the video showcased by the video installation are both made in collaboration with Lucian Bickerton.
The opening will take place on Sunday 11 February, at 16:00.

Bert van Santen’s art selection ‘K’ includes original work, some of which is unique work. The art selection is limited to 50 units, in an A3-format.
In 2017 the third volume of art selection ‘K’ will be distributed, including signed work by diverse artists (every volume contains four artworks)
This third volume will consist out of K5 and K6.
K5 bears the title ‘Fleurs du Mal’ and contains four pieces of art by Bert van Santen:

Het recente werk (2016) van Bert van Santen draagt de titel
"Fleurs du Mal".
Op de materieschilderijen van olieverf laat van Santen zien wat hij als colorist in huis heeft. De bloemen en takken zijn haast reliëfs. De bloemen zitten veelal aan dorre takken.
Bloemen komen in eerder werk van Bert van Santen al veelvuldig voor.
Hij heeft o.a. schilderijen gemaakt, waarin hij sneeuwklokjes verwerkte, een reeks tekeningen met de titel "Sing for a flower" en kunstenaarsboeken "rom your food flowers will grow", "Les fleurs",...
Bloemen worden vaak als metafoor gebruikt en hebben ook een filosofische betekenis.
Al in de antieke wereld als ook bij de oude Egyptenaren werd aan bloemen een diepere betekenis gegeven en bloemen spelen ook vandaag nog steeds in de kunst, muziek en poëzie een belangrijke rol. Sommige titels van de werken Van Bert van Santen refereren hieraan.
